Anton Frondell’s Prospect Profile for the 2025 NHL Draft
Anton Frondell is a 6-foot, 196-pound Swedish forward playing in his country’s second division, the HockeyAllsvenskan. The prospect has also represented Sweden internationally with the U20 and U18 national teams. As of this writing, he has recorded 15 points, including 7 goals, in 23 games against men, along with 7 points in 10 games in the J20 Nationell.
With Djurgårdens IF, the prospect is averaging 11 minutes and 33 seconds of ice time per game on the third line alongside Victor Eklund. His usage has varied throughout the season, ranging from under 10 minutes per game in October to nearly 14 minutes per game since January 17, 2025. It was only in late December that he began receiving regular power-play time, while he is not utilized on the penalty kill.
Anton Frondell: Mobility and Physicality
Anton Frondell’s physicality is undoubtedly one of his key assets for a future in the NHL. He is not necessarily a pure power forward or a player who constantly throws himself into opponents to make an impact. However, the Swede uses his body effectively to shield the puck, separate opponents from the puck, and win battles in general. While he does not have an above-average frame, his balance on skates is remarkable. He outmuscles and outsmarts most of his opponents in battles and is rarely knocked off the puck without putting up a strong fight.
He also has the finesse to elude defenders when controlling the puck, but his ability to read the game allows him to avoid pressure before it even arrives. Whether in traffic, in transition, or along the boards, Anton Frondell handles the puck exceptionally well without slowing down his team’s play. This is one of the qualities that connect him to Nick Suzuki. He is a cerebral player with an average build who stands out due to his mature game. He is not the flashiest or most electrifying player, but his decisions on the ice are sound and ahead of his age.
One similarity he shares with the Montreal Canadiens’ captain is his lack of explosiveness and inconsistent pace at times. In junior hockey, Nick Suzuki was not known for his speed or relentless motor, and the same applies to Anton Frondell. Both have an adequate top speed, but their first few strides are sluggish. Additionally, they sometimes overthink situations instead of relying on instinct. This is common among young players who base their actions on their understanding of the game. However, in North America, where there is less space, Frondell will need to keep his feet moving more to fully translate his skill set.
Anton Frondell: Offensive Potential
Frondell is an offensively versatile prospect. Whether playing as a center or winger, he adapts well to different situations. Personally, I prefer him at center due to his ability to read the play and exploit opportunities. His lack of speed is more noticeable on the wing, where he has less control over the play and must be more involved in straight-line rushes. However, this does not significantly impact his overall effectiveness.
With the puck, the left-handed forward generates a high volume of shots from various areas. His quick and heavy release is difficult for goaltenders to read, as he alters his shooting angle efficiently and can execute shots on either leg while moving. His one-timer is particularly effective and may rank among the elite of the 2025 NHL Draft class. His coordination is flawless, and he consistently hits the target while adapting quickly to imperfect passes. His wrist shot is just as impressive from both close and long range. I would like to see a bit more quickness around the net to deke goalies, but at this point, that is a minor detail.
As mentioned earlier, Frondell is a versatile forward who also possesses solid physical strength. This allows him to perform under pressure, and his strong decision-making helps him create scoring chances even when heavily defended. This is more evident against competition his own age, but it remains true in the HockeyAllsvenskan, especially since January. It will be interesting to see if his offensive production holds up through the playoffs. Djurgårdens IF has high aspirations this season as they aim for promotion to the SHL.
Anton Frondell: Defensive Play
At the moment, Frondell is not heavily relied upon in defensive situations in the HockeyAllsvenskan. However, his off-puck play is well beyond his years. He is a responsible player who positions himself correctly in the defensive zone and actively uses his stick to disrupt passing lanes and neutralize opponents. His puck battles tend to favor him, primarily due to his strength but also because of his intelligence.
Since Djurgårdens IF is focused on competing for relagation, his development in all areas of the game is not necessarily a priority for the team. They wany to perform and their veterans are the one that takes the tougher jobs. However, this is not a major concern. Frondell remains engaged defensively and supports his teammates effectively. A bit more speed could make him even more efficient at pressuring the opponent and transitioning the play, but he has no trouble distributing the puck to advance the attack.
2025 NHL Draft Projection
Once considered a contender for the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, Anton Frondell’s stock has slightly declined. Missing the start of the season and dealing with injuries in November and December, he struggled to find his rhythm in the HockeyAllsvenskan early on. As a result, he frequently moved between junior hockey, the U18 national team, and Sweden’s second division without being able to establish consistency.
It wasn’t until January 2025 that his performance stabilized in the HockeyAllsvenskan, playing alongside Victor Eklund, as the organization stopped moving him between leagues. Frondell is now finding his stride again, resembling the prospect many projected as a top pick last year. Personally, I still see him as a top-10 selection, possibly even top-7 depending on which teams are drafting in that range. His performance at the U18 World Championship in April and the HockeyAllsvenskan playoffs will ultimately determine his final draft ranking.
